I've Got My Eye on You Boy
It seems that with each child time goes faster and faster. With what seems like a blink of an eye, Cruz is almost 15 months!!
I have not decided if it is a good or a bad thing but I have been on Cruz like you would not believe. Almost obsessing over when and what he was doing, behaviors, he may be exhibiting, etc. I think I have every reason to be that way. There are so many things that Cruz is doing that Prestyn did not do at this age. Prestyn was not walking yet, babbling or making eye contact. But still, studies have suggested that 18 months is the best age to best determine if a child could have autism. The chances are there. He is a younger sibling to a child on the spectrum and he is a BOY. The last statistic I read I think said if the child has an older sibling on the spectrum and a boy thier chances sit at 20%. To you that may not seem very high, but to me it is. I like to think we are good and each day gives me reassurance that we are only going to blessed with one child on the spectrum. Don't get me wrong, if it turns out different I will love Cruz no less and we would be up for the challenge!
Just to make sure I am not alone in my worrying I ask other parents who have a child on the spectrum and and a younger child if they worry as well? The majority do and I have been told this is pretty normal; and to give me even more reassurance, lasts night episode of Parenthood dealt with this very issue!
In other Cruz news:
In the last couple weeks Cruz has began to sign to us! We never pushed the issue,just had Baby Einstein First Signs on in his room anytime he was in there!! He will sign more, milk, please, and use your chin to sign thank you, and we are working on food! This makes things a little easier then having him pout scream until he gets what he needs. It is really so cute and he gets a kick out of it!! He is also becoming extremely tough as he falls victim to an unusually mean Prestyn. We have to keep a very close eye on them when they are in the same room, because for whatever reason Prestyn is very mean to him or any child that is smaller then him. We are going to be taking Cruz into therapy with Prestyn so we can get some help on what may be triggering this behavior. I think Cruz may also need therapy since the poor baby has been pushed down, pinched, kicked and bitten. It is also very difficult with Prestyn because they have told us the best way to punish him is by positive discipline. Yeah, that's not working, but then again neither is time-out, a nice paddle with a wooden spoon, or getting upset with him. I am open to any suggestions!!

Apple Apple-a, a, a
Prestyn is full swing into his second year at Shining Stars! Were were lucky enough to land a spot with the teachers he had last year! I can go on and on about these women, but most of my readers know how amazing they are!! He has a new speech language pathologist who spends almost everyday in his classroom. She has introduced the students to some new songs as well. One of which is letter sounds! Prestyn is doing so well with this song and we sing it at least 3 times before we go to bed, "Do you know your letter sounds...Apple Apple A,A,A!!" I find myself singing it throughout the day at work sometimes!
Another new thing for Prestyn this year is a new student! Since last year it was only boys in Prestyn's class. Well a few weeks ago they were blessed with a sweet little girl. Miss Ansley is just to cute for words. Prestyn has adjusted well to having a little girl around, at first he was a little apprehensive because of the attention she was receiving. He has now taken upon himself to be her little helper (although at times I think he just annoys her). He helps her check her schedule and leads her around the room!!
Prestyn has made a huge stride in potty training. He goes number 1 in the potty almost all the time. However, we are having major difficulties with the #2, sigh. Most days he will wait until bedtime (when we put a diaper on him) to go in his diaper. We have tried a few methods but they do not seem to be helping. We will give it time, I think at this point this is about all we can do.
More and more people have mentioned to me that they would never knew Prestyn was a child on the spectrum. This makes me very happy, his team is doing what we have set out to do. When I say team, I mean our family, friends, teachers and therapists. He is doing very well, things are not perfect that is fore sure, but from where were were to where we are today I would say we have come a very long way. I am very excited for what the future holds! I had a conversation with someone and we both agree that Prestyn has Aspergurs. This is a very high functioning form of autism. From what I know "aspies" have social and sensory issues . Which would explain some of the challenges we are facing with Prestyn now. He still hates to have his hair washed, hates haircuts, refuses to let us give him a good scrub in the bath, will tolerate but hates to have is hands dirty as well as some behaviors he displays when we are in a large store or area where there is a lot going on. When we go to restaurant's you can tell his mind is trying to process all the activity the minute we walk in. Sometimes it is just to much for his brain to process and he will end up under the table playing with his truck that almost never leaves his hand. Sure people stare because we are allowing our child to play on the floor, we have gotten very good at ignoring those stares and feel we are doing the best we can to raise our son.
He is getting very good with his words but will still echo and speaks in third person. Overall as I said he is doing so very good. Still gluten free and casein as well, and this is going so well. He was tested for Celiacs and Fragile X syndrome both of which came back negative. We are hoping to have some other blood work done, but this is a very intense process for Prestyn so we are waiting a few months.
Well Prestyn has just informed me that "bus 607 is on it's way to go to school" so I better get his back pack ready! I hope to get video of him today as he walks to the bus. He usually closes the door on me and tells me bye through the door. He is so independent and does not want mommy walking him down the driveway to the bus!

First Day of School
Let's try this again!
Why hello there! It sure has been awhile!! I thought I would get back into the swing of things and start blogging again! I've missed it! The Baca's have been very busy. A quick run down. We have been having so much fun! We had a very busy and eventful summer. Degan turned 5; Cruz turned 1; Prestyn started using the potty; Amos started a new job; and me, well I have just been trying to keep up, oh and I graduated! With Degan turning the big FIVE it meant one thing. Time to start preparing for Kindergarten! This was a big deal and brought with it many unanswered questions? The most important unanswered questions? Where in the heck are we going to send him? We toyed with the idea of sending him to a catholic school, private, and public, but were still not sure how any of them would work out? One day I was driving to meet my parents for the boys and I saw a billboard for a NM International School. I looked it up on the web and was impressed. We were asked to attend an information session the following week. We did, and we never turned back. We are so excited that Degan was able to be enrolled in this school and only 3 weeks into the year we are in awe. See, Degan will be expected to speak, write and read in Spanish by the 4th grade. Which means, you guessed it, he will be bilingual! Degan has adjusted pretty well to having to wear uniforms, waking up at 6 am everyday, and most importantly re-learning everything he has been taught to him in Spanish. Now if we can get him to take something other then a jelly sandwich for lunch everyday. He is so picky!! The first day I tried to trick him by mixing the peanut butter in with the jelly and when I picked him up he let me know how it didn't work. In his words "mom don't ever give me peanut butter again!" Sigh....well we are working on adding some variety. Luckily he likes most veggies and loves blueberries and yogurt. We will work on the main course as the year goes by.
I will try and post some first day of school pictures of a very unhappy Degan when I have a free moment!!
Like I said I am going to try and keep up with the updates as much as I can. Next up Prestyn and Cruz. I am so excited!! These boys light up my life, keep mommy and daddy very busy! I am also very excited to debut my new blog for my crafts that have been keeping me busy! I have done a lot of re-purposing and have so much fun turning "nothing into something!" This should be in the next week or so!! Stay tuned
